In my box, it came with Pappardelle. Pappardelle are large, very broad, flat pasta, similar to wide fettuccine. It originated from the region of Tuscany in Italy. When I saw that pasta, knew that I wanted to make my delicious tomato sauce recipe.

I been making this sauce recipe since college and you can actually use it as pizza sauce. There are two ways to make it the sauce; one is a have recipe and the other is from scratch.

[I have them for you below, after the pasta instructions.]

Tomato Sauce Ingredients:

  • 1 28 ounce can tomato sauce
  • 2 teaspoons of onion powder
  • 3 teaspoons of garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon chili flakes
  • A pinch of Kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian Seasoning

Method 2:

  • 1 28 ounce can crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion finely diced
  • 3-5 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon chili flakes
  • A pinch of Kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian Seasoning
  • 2 teaspoons butter
  • 1/4 cup water + more maybe needed

Tomato Sauce Directions:

Method 1:

1. In a sauce on, on medium heat, add all ingredients.

2. Using a spoon, stir all ingredient together until we’ll combined.

3. Reduce to low and allow sauce to simmer for 10 minutes. Then enjoy over pasta.

Method 2:

  1. In a sauce pan, heat the olive oil over high heat until it shimmers. Saute the onions, stirring frequently, until they soften and shine, about three minutes.
  2. Add the garlic. Stir to combine for 2 minutes. Add the basil, red pepper flakes, salt, and Italian seasoning. Stir to combine. Add the butter. Stir, cook for about 1 minute.
  3. Scrape the bottom of the pan to remove any stuck on bits. Add half the can of the crushed tomatoes and bring heat to low.
  4. Add remaining tomatoes and stir in 1/4 cup water. If the sauce seems too stocky, add more water.
  5. Allow sauce to simmer for 10 minutes to 30 minutes. If you are simmering for longer, it’s recommended to stir occasionally and add more water for the right texture. Add to pasta and enjoy.
